The Minnesota Wild’s ECHL affiliate, the Orlando Solar Bears announced NHL veteran Ray Sheppard has joined the team as a Special Assistant to Head Coach Drake Berehowsky.
Sheppard had an impressive pro career, appearing in 817 NHL games. The Petawawa, Ontario, native was selected in the third round, 60th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. In his rookie year with Buffalo in 1987-88, Sheppard scored 38 goals and added 27 assists for 65 points in 74 games and was selected to the NHL All-Rookie Team.
During his NHL tenure, Sheppard skated for the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. In 817 games, Sheppard collected 357 goals and 300 assists for 657 points. In 1993-94 as a member of the Red Wings, the 6-foot-1, 194 pound right winger notched 52 goals and 41 assists for 93 points.
“We are very excited to have Ray join our coaching staff,” said Head Coach Drake Berehowsky in a statement released by the team. “His NHL experience will be invaluable for the development of our players.”
The Orlando Solar Bears will begin the club’s coming Out of Hibernation season on Oct. 13 visiting the Florida Everblades.
