The Minnesota Wild held its outdoor practice presented by Dairy Queen on Sunday at the Guidant John Rose Oval in Roseville. But calling it a practice might be a stretch.
Head Coach Mike Yeo seemed to realize that going outside meant going back to the game’s roots, so the majority of today’s action wasn’t so much a practice, but a no-rules, no-refs game of shinny hockey. The laughs spread from the players on the ice to the fans and children that surrounded the rink, especially at the end, when every player was sent out from some 11-on-11 hockey.
Inevitably, the outdoor practice brings the conversation to bringing an outdoor NHL game to Minnesota, which Yeo is all for. But even the practice got the players excited. Nate Prosser said he’d practice outdoors everyday if he could.
It was a great way to cap off the weekend, which featured Hockey Day Minnesota yesterday. That was highlighted by five great games, a game-winner by Eden Prairie’s Chad Rau in the Wild’s win and more than $120,000 raised for Jack Jablonski.
