Last year, Colton Gillies watched Nathan Smith, Andy Hilbert, Petr Kalus, Cody Almond, Maxim Noreau, Justin Falk, Clayton Stoner, Robbie Earl, Robbie Earl, Robbie Earl, Robbie Earl, Robbie Earl again, Robbie Earl yet again all get called up from Houston by the Minnesota Wild.
Gillies, the first round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, stayed in Texas and honed his game, hoping 2010 would be his year to return to the NHL. It appears that he’ll take that next step tomorrow when the Wild is expected to make him the first callup of the 2010-11 season due to an illness sweeping through the Wild locker room.
Gillies impressed in training camp, and he’s had a good start with the Aeros, posting a goal and an assist through four games.
It’s possible he doesn’t get into the lineup if everyone receives a clean bill of health following Tuesday’s morning skate. Regardless, he earned the first callup, which means the club is rewarding his work and effort early on.
If he cracks the lineup against Vancouver, it will be his first look at NHL game action since April 11, 2009 in the season finale against Columbus.
