Hopefully Minnesota Wild players enjoyed their President’s Day off yesterday, because they put in a full day’s work today. After a lengthy, up-tempo practice that Head Coach Mike Yeo was pleased with, the players had a session with Army Ranger/motivational expert J.B. Spisso.
As many of you know, Spisso is an intense guy, and he could be heard outside the Wild locker room as he addressed the team. Yeo said having a guy that has been through what he has coming in at a time like this can help the players “sharpen their focus.”
Mikko Koivu did not participate in today’s pracgtice, and Yeo said he is 50/50 right now as far as making the trip. Koivu did skate on his own, but Yeo said he just doesn’t know. Perhaps more will be known after the team’s practice tomorrow before departing for Florida.
Greg Zanon also missed practice today due to illness.
Can we officially say we are in tournament time now? The state boys’ hockey playoffs kick off tonight, and the girls’ state tournament kicks off tomorrow at Xcel Energy Center. In two weeks, the boys’ state tournament will be here, followed by the WCHA Final Five and then the NCAA regionals the weekend after that. Add to that 23 crucial Wild games – 13 of which are at home – and you’ve got to say we have entered the best time of the year for Minnesota hockey fans.
